The Mudslingers Board held a meeting on October 10 with all members in attendance, plus four guests. Here’s a recap of the key discussions and decisions:
October Show:
- Our October show had 47 riders and horses.
- The A division split (12 & under, 13 & over) resulted in a much more balanced 7/10 split.
- We’re getting closer to needing a AA division split, with 11 riders competing at that level at the October show (and several regulars absent). That number includes the three riders who bumped to AA. Our policy is that a division needs 14 or more riders for three consecutive shows (a two-day show counts as two shows) to split the division.

Stall Cleaning Policy:
- A huge thank you to Sara for taking care of all the stall mucking after the last show!
- Going forward, any stall left unmucked will incur a $30 fee, payable to the Mudslingers.
- Remember to remove all manure and wet/dirty shavings from your stall (including large outdoor stalls) and place them in a pile outside the stall door. This allows CRC to efficiently drive by and clear the piles.
- If you’re new to overnighting at CRC, please don’t hesitate to ask a Board member for clarification on the process.
- Stall reservations for the November show should go through Sara (619) 843-3243.
Awards Banquet Update:
- We’re thrilled to have nearly 100 RSVPs for the upcoming Awards Banquet!
- The Perfect Potluck sign-up is being revised to accommodate the larger-than-expected turnout.
- Get ready to celebrate an amazing season – the awards are going to be incredible!
- We will allow people to pre-order and pre-pay for yearbooks, particularly those who would like to pay via credit card.
November Show Sneak Peek:
- Mark your calendars for the two-day November show!

- The pattern order is set and we’re excited to announce a fun, no-horse-required “Hobby Horse Race” as a special fundraising event! Think modified Barrels pattern…with a jump!
- Pattern Order – Saturday: Barrels, Figure 8 Flags, Poles 2, Figure 8 Stake, Big T, Birangle, Keyhole
- Pattern Order – Sunday: Quadrangle, Speed Barrels, Poles 1, Hurry Scurry, Speed Ball, Single Stake
- Remember: We revised our rules between seasons, so that riders need 8 or more times to bump to the next division during a two-day show (versus 7 times). Riders still need 4 times to bump at a one-day show.
Headwear Update: Safety, Tradition, and Show Flow:
The Mudslingers Board reviewed and updated our headwear rules with a focus on safety, respect for the sport, and efficient operation of our shows.
Safety First: As always, helmets are strongly encouraged for all riders and remain mandatory for those 17 years old and younger.
Respect for the Sport: For riders 18 and older, we recognize the tradition of wearing specific hats in equestrian disciplines. After reviewing other equestrian dress codes and recognizing the emphasis on professionalism and respect for the sport, we’ve outlined acceptable hat options consistent with chosen rider attire:
- Western Riders: Cowboy hats and Spanish riding hats are permitted.
- English Riders: Top hats (dressage hats), bowler/derby hats, and Spanish riding hats are permitted.
Keeping the Show Running Smoothly: While we want to honor tradition, it’s important to keep our shows running smoothly and respect everyone’s time. Therefore:
- Dropped Hat Penalty: A hat falling off during a run will result in a 1-second penalty added to the rider’s time.
- Repeated Dropped Hats: If a rider drops their hat three times during a show, they will be asked to ride without that hat for the remainder of the event. This helps us avoid delays and ensures that our judges and volunteers can focus on the competition.
